Service dogs in training got some first-hand experience with some first responders at the Keizer fire station. Volunteer puppy raisers from the Joys of Living Assistance Dogs brought their furry charges to let the dogs get used to the sights and sounds of emergency crews.
“We’re hoping to remove their fear of firefighters,” said Anne-Marie Storms, the public education specialist for Keizer Fire District, adding that many dogs are unsettled by the arrival of strangers, and during an emergency that anxiety can ramp even higher. “On a medical call, there are five of us responding. We have our gear and our kits, there’s already a lot of noise and chaos, and here are these strange people coming into your home.
“For a service dog, they need to be able to deal with that, to serve their person,” Storms said.
The young dogs and puppies who attended Thursday’s training showed few signs of fear. On the contrary, as a volunteer firefighter decked out in full gear — complete with helmet — walked rapidly up to one trainer, the 3-month-old labrador she was holding leaped up to try to lick his face.
